Full Training and Assessment Course

Everything you need from start to finish
Option to get 2 or more tickets and save time & money

Student per machine ratio:

Normally one (maximum two) students per machine

Choices of machinery:
  • Skid Steer Loader (Bobcat)
  • Excavator
  • Front End Loader
  • Roller
  • Backhoe
    * Note for Backhoe – You need to supply your own machine
This course is suitable for
  1. The complete novice
  2. The experienced operator with no avenue for completing a logbook
  3. The employer who needs to get an employee licenced quickly and with minimum disruption in the workplace.
Duration (indication for beginners) :

3 days for 1 ticket
4 days for 2 tickets
5 days for 3 tickets
6 days for 4 tickets

*It can be arranged over consecutive days, spread out over Saturdays, or on completely different days to suit you.

Duration explained:

Given that the training for a piece of earthmoving equipment is competency based, some participants may achieve competency earlier than others and be ready for assessment prior to the end of the course. If this is the case and you are permitted to drop a day of practical training, the cost of the course also drops.

If you have prior experience with the machines, or have hours recorded in a logbook under old system but where your logbook is no longer legally recognised, it may also lead to a possible early assessment.

It is envisaged that a 3 day plus intensive home study would be adequate to bring a trainees through to competency. However, if after 3 days the trainee is experiencing difficulty with some element of the course, it may be necessary for the RTO to organise some additional training. There may be an extra charge for this service but it would be discussed with the Trainee.

The students with or without operating experience, who have a willing employer ready to provide the necessary facilities and direct supervision for the Trainee through to Licence.

Course Outline:

Stage 1

Covers all the formal theory training, an initial skills assessment, practical demonstrations and training under our supervision to ensure the trainee has grasped the basic principles of how to operate safely, before returning to the workplace.   Also theory assessments can be conducted. (These assessments can be done at Stage 2)

At your work

At the end of the Stage 1, we issue a logbook and structured training plan for the trainee to complete in their workplace. Each trainee goes back to work and need to document their 40 hours of “informal or work based” training, under direct supervision of a suitable person who already holds their current relevant “proof of competency” for that machine. (2 months to complete)

Click here for clarification of “direct supervision”

Direct supervision means ensuring a capacity to respond in an emergency situation i.e. Trainee supervisor not sat in the tearoom whilst trainee is operating a piece of machinary.

Fines of up to $6,000 apply for non-compliance with this regulation.

Click here for clarification of “proof of competency”

This means an operator who has the particular existing OHS machinery licence or the new RTO issued competency card, they will have relevant recent experience on the machine they are to supervise the training on.

* The trainee needs to complete formal training (Stage 1) before they can start to record hours in a logbook.

Stage 2

Trainee or employer calls us to say ready to be assessed. The logbook will be reviewed and final practical assessment will be conducted.

* If you do not want trainees on logbooks in your workplace, we can also deliver a Full Training and Assessment Course at your site for you.

1 Day Gap Training and Assessment Course
Recognised Prior Learning (RPL)

Option to get 2 or more tickets and save time & money

Choices of machinery:
  • Skid Steer Loader (Bobcat)
  • Excavator
  • Front End Loader
  • Roller
  • Backhoe * Note for Backhoe – You need to supply your own machine
This course is suitable for:

Experienced operators with successful RPL application (Evidence of Previous Experience required)

The provision of a solid Recognised Prior Learning (RPL) application acts as a “bridge” for acceptance onto a one day course through to assessment. Depending on the outcome of your application, although it is extremely rare you may be eligible to skip any sort of training and undertake the assessment only.

For the trainee who has completed a Recognised Prior Learning Application. BUT whose underpinning (theoretical) knowledge of the subject is not strong, broad or verifiable enough to be permitted to just sit the assessment only. Likewise a Trainee may meet the theory requirements but fall short on practical experience (skills). Trainees are required to enter the classroom and undertake some gap training, before progressing through to assessment, given that you need to be 100% correct to pass the test for all OHS Courses.

Duration:

1 Day

Course Times:

Commence daily
Start at 8 am
Finish by 3-4 pm

* Start and Finish times can be varied to suit employers /students requirements.

Prices:

Please call us as everyone has different needs and experiences.

Course Outline:

RPL Application

Trainee to provide their RPL application to The Operator School, for verification prior to acceptance onto the course.

We try and give all RPL applications a prompt response. In some instances this can be an on the spot process. However, please be aware that in some instances the “mapping back” can take up to 10 days, it can be quite a time consuming exercise to contact overseas referees and map all the experience back against the Competency.

We found that the outcome for the some of these RPL applicants are advised that a Full Training and Assessment Course is more appropriate, with a view to an early assessment is their most probable (and cost effective) pathway through to assessment and a licence, given that you need to be 100% correct to pass the test for all OHS courses.

* The responsibility for providing information to support is on the person seeking the RPL.
If an employer has delivered their own formal (theory) training and informal (practical i.e. logbook) training to a Trainee, The Operator School will need to obtain copies of the Trainer’s qualification and current, relevant machinery licence. We will also need to see what was covered within the training to ensure that it is acceptable before a decision can be made as to whether the trainee can go straight to assessment or whether gap training is still needed.

Prior to the day of the course

The Operator School will provide home study notes giving students all the theory behind the safe operation of earthmoving machinery prior to commencement of the Course.

On the day of the course

Students comes into “Classroom” to fill in any potential gaps in their learning. The day consists of

  • Classroom theory
  • Practical skills refresher training
  • Written and Practical assessments

Verification of Competency or VOC

What is VOC:

Verification of competency (VOC) is a common term to the workplace when it comes to operating machinery or equipment.

The New Work Place Health and Safety Act and Regulations that came into force in January 2012 place greater emphasis on the responsibilities of an employer and less on the Regulators themselves. There are hefty fines if obligations are not met.

Click here to view the fines

Type of Offence Maximum Penalty Points Corporation Individual as PCBU or officer Individual as worker or other
Category 1 6000 $3 million $600,000 five years jail or both $300,000 five years jail or both
Category 2 3000 $1.5 million $300,000 $150,000
Category 3 1000 $500,000 $100,000 $50,000

Category 1 – a duty holder engages in conduct that recklessly exposes a person to a risk of death or serious injury or illness. This offence is a crime and will be prosecuted in the District Court.

Category 2 – a duty holder fails to comply with a health and safety duty that exposes a person to risk of death or serious injury or illness.

Category 3 – a duty holder fails to comply with a health and safety duty. Proceedings for Category 2 and 3 offences will be taken summarily

In the old days competency was never checked… you obtained your Licence … you presented your Licence on site when asked … and it was just accepted that you could operate. This practice is no longer acceptable under current Legislation. An employer must check that a worker (includes a contractor) is safe on a particular machine, doing a specific task. This is often referred to as “current competency”.

Even if you hold an old style OHS Licence, this may or may not be acceptable to an employer.

licence

VOC is a method to assist employers to meet OHS requirements and ensure staff are competent to operate equipment or perform a task.

It is commonly used in many industries for pre-employment checks, contractual arrangements or site requirements.

* Please note you cannot obtain a VOC for a machine on which you have previously not undertaken any training and assessment. If that is the case, we have range of courses on offer. Please call us to discuss options on 07 5537 9244

Choices of machinery:
  • Skid Steer Loader (Bobcat)
  • Excavator
  • Front End Loader
  • Roller
  • Backhoe * Note for Backhoe – You need to supply your own machine
Duration:

1 – 3 hours

Course Times:

Commence daily

* Start and Finish times can be varied to suit employers /students requirements.

Prices:

1 Person: $350
2 People: $300 each
3 People: $250 each

Outcome:

At the end of VOC course, you will receive a credit card size competency card with your photo on.

What if the person it not competent?

If you are deemed not competent for the job that you are being asked to do, it will be discussed with you and/or your employer options for further training, logbook hours etc.
