The Operator School is a Registered Training Organisation approved by the government (RTO No. 31513) delivering forklift licences and training to satisfy the needs of employers and trainees. We have been servicing Brisbane and the Gold Coast since 1999.

Our forklift driver’s training course covers the following unit:
• TLILIC0003 Licence to operate a forklift truck

Our Forklift (LF) training and licensing courses are nationally accredited. Forklift drivers licences issued in Queensland are recognised nationally and qualify you to operate a forklift anywhere in Australia.

The forklift licences are classed as High-Risk Work Licences: they are photographic and renewable every 5 years.

Flexible Forklift Training Dates

We can arrange our forklift driving course dates to suit your needs. For instance, the course may be organised on consecutive days, distributed over Saturdays, or scheduled for entirely different days. We can also schedule evening classes if that suits you better.

Flexible Forklift Training Plan

With the forklift licence training course at The Operator School, you get trained for what you need. This also means you pay for what you need. If you have prior experience with the machines and have acceptable evidence, you may be eligible for a reduction in your training hours and your course fees. As an RTO, we offer recognition of prior learning.

Get both your forklift and order picker licences to save time and money

We provide you with the opportunity to receive both your forklift driver’s licence and your order picker licence at the same time. This means that you save on both time and money on training.

You may be eligible for Funding

If you work (employed or unemployed) within the Queensland building or construction industry, you may also be eligible to receive Construction Skills Queensland funding towards your forklift licence training.

Benefits of Getting Qualified with Us

Our forklift training facility is located on the Gold Coast. We can also come to your site anywhere from the southern parts of the Gold Coast to Brisbane.

We offer forklift licence QLD training on a range of 8 different machines, including gas and battery electric forklifts, counterbalance, and high-reach trucks.

We train in a racking system up to 6 metres in height, using attachments such as a jib, slippers (fork extensions) and personnel cage. The training required to qualify for a nationally recognised forklift licence involves a wide variety of loads, including palletized items, drums, stillages, barrels and heavy items. We also load and unload truck bodies. The experienced trainers at The Operator School will teach you the practical skills you need to do the job.

Stage 1

Covers all the formal theory training, an initial skills assessment, practical demonstrations and training under our supervision to ensure the trainee has grasped the basic principles of how to operate safely, before returning to the workplace. Written and Calculation assessments are normally conducted at this time.

At the end of Stage 1, we issue a logbook and structured training plan for the trainee to complete in their workplace. Each trainee goes back to work and needs to document their 40 hours of “informal or work-based” training, under the direct supervision of a suitable person who already holds their current relevant high-risk photographic licence for that machine (issued within the last 5 years).

Click here for clarification of “direct supervision”

Direct supervision means ensuring a capacity to respond in an emergency situation i.e. Trainee supervisor not sat in the tearoom whilst trainee is unloading a semi-trailer.

Fines of up to $6,000 apply for non-compliance with this regulation.

licences

* The trainee needs to complete formal training (Stage 1) before they can start to record hours in a logbook.

Stage 2

The trainee or employer calls us to say they are ready to be assessed. The logbook will be reviewed and final Licencing assessments will be conducted.

Important Note about recording log book:

Ideally, the logbook should be completed within 2 months. This is equal to only 5 hours a week on the machine. If you feel it’s going to be a challenge to log this many hours a week, please contact us to discuss other options available to you.

If you do not want trainees on logbooks in your workplace, we can also deliver a Full Training and Assessment Course at your site for you. If you are looking at a group of 3-6, you will also need enough machines to ensure that everyone has enough time in the seats to record the required logbook training hours.

Please note that an inspector from WHSQ may be present to audit the assessment as every RTO now needs to provide WHSQ with a 3 business day prior notification that a forklift assessment is going to be conducted.

1 Day Gap Training and Assessment Course (plus Licencing Assessments) (RPL)

This course is suitable for:

Experienced operators with successful RPL application (Evidence of Previous Experience required)

RPL (Recognised Prior Learning) would be applicable in scenarios as listed below:

  • You may have a recently expired Australian forklift licence that the Regulators will not permit you to renew
  • You may have an overseas forklift licence
  • You may have a forklift competency issued in the armed forces
  • You may have done your forklift course previously but not submitted your licence application within 60 days and need to be re-assessed
  • You may have a forklift mining competency that you wish to transfer over to a current high-risk work licence

The provision of a solid Recognised Prior Learning application acts as a “bridge” for acceptance onto a one day course, plus assessments.

Duration:

1 Day (plus licencing assessments).

Course Times:

Commence daily

Start at 8 am

Finish by 3-4 pm

* Start and Finish times can be varied to suit employers /students requirements.

* Night and Sunday Courses are available on request.

Prices:

Training and Assessment $450

* If it is discovered that your operating skills are not at the required level to pass the practical assessment (you may not have actually operated a machine for a while), then it may be necessary to extend your course if you require additional practical training. There may be an additional charge of $100 to cover these costs but this would be discussed with you.

* GST free

* A $96.80 licence application fee is payable on line to Worksafe Qld for each class of high risk work

* A Trainee is permitted 2 attempts at each of the assessments within their course fee. After this a re-assessment fee of $150 may be charged for each assessment

Course Outline:

RPL Application

Trainee to provide their RPL application to The Operator School, for verification prior to acceptance onto the course

If you live local, we may ask you to call into our Training Facility and undertake an initial 10-15 mins practical skills check, just so we can be sure that a 1-day RPL course is going to be suitable for you.

We try to give all RPL applications a prompt response. In some instances, this can be an on the spot process. However, please be aware that in some instances the “mapping back” can take a few days, it can be quite a time-consuming exercise to contact overseas referees and map all the experience back against the Competency.

We found that the outcome for the some of these RPL applicants are advised that a Full Training and Assessment Course is more appropriate, with a view to an early assessment is their most probable (and cost-effective) pathway through to assessment and a licence, given that you need to be 100% correct to pass the test for all OHS courses.

* The responsibility for providing information to support is on the person seeking the RPL.

On the day of the course:

Students come into “Classroom” to fill in any potential gaps in their learning. The day consists of:

  • Classroom theory
  • Practical skills refresher training
  • Written and Practical assessments

Verification of Competency (VOC)

What is VOC:

Verification of competency (VOC) is a common term in the workplace when it comes to operating machinery or equipment.

The Workplace Health and Safety Act and Regulations place great emphasis on the responsibilities of an employer and less on the Regulators themselves.

In the old days, competency was never checked… you obtained your Licence … you presented your Licence on-site when asked … and it was just accepted that you could operate. This practice is no longer acceptable under current Legislation. An employer must check that a worker (includes a contractor) is safe on a particular machine, doing a specific task. This is often referred to as “current competency”.

Even if you hold a current High-Risk Licence for Forklift, this may or may not be acceptable to an employer.

licence-tick

VOC is a method to assist employers to meet OHS requirements and ensure staff are competent to operate equipment or perform a task.

It is commonly used in many industries for pre-employment checks, contractual arrangements or site requirements.

* Please note you cannot obtain a VOC if you do not hold a current High Risk Licence for a Forklift. If that is the case, we have a range of courses on offer. Please call us to discuss options on 07 5537 9244

Duration:

1 – 3 hours

Course Times:

Commence daily

* Start and Finish times can be varied to suit employers /students requirements.

Outcome:

At the end of VOC course, you will have a certificate which verifies competency

What if the person is not competent?

If you are deemed not competent for the job that you are being asked to do, it will be discussed with you and/or your employer options for further training, logbook hours etc.
